MAPLE MCM

This project began smack dab in the middle of the pandemic. The bones of this mid-century house were clear from the moment you stepped inside this house with its stunning lake views nestled in the tree tops. But the entry was uninspiring and the coveted views were blocked by a wall cutting off the house from the entrance. Several previous remodels left the kitchen dark and cramped and the flooring mismatched along with heavily textured walls and ceilings. Our goal was to breathe new life into this diamond in the rough and play up its mid-century roots. We preserved the original tongue and groove ceilings and opened up the wall to the dining room utilizing a slatted decorative feature which acted as a structural element and played into the homes mid century vibe. By removing the aggressive stone on the fireplace and replacing it with dimensional white ceramic oval tiles and hand troweled plaster, we were able to create a focal point with a “less is more” approach. Addressing the overly textured walls and ceilings throughout the house by skim coating all surfaces was a game changer, along with unifying the flooring by adding new wide plank hardwoods to complement the wood ceilings. Removing the jail-like 1970’s Doug fir railings and using custom glass railing in it’s place gave the house a sense of floating and visual ease. The custom kitchen is every cooks’ dream with storage for days and bells and whistles at every turn to make food prep and entertaining a breeze. The 5ft kitchen sink replaces the need for a separate prep sink and allows for lots of helping hands in the kitchen with room for everyone. The master bedroom’s existing closet was hidden up a tight, awkward stairwell. Since the bedroom had tall, pitched ceilings and had plenty of space, we decided to make the room feel cozier by taking some of the square footage to create a custom closet behind the bed and reworked the original closet and stairwell to create a workout room complete with ballet barre and mirrors. Wallpaper and lighting were carefully chosen to add texture and drama. The results could be seen on our clients’ faces when they first walked into their new home. It was the sanctuary we all need right now.
